KILIFI MENTORSHIP SESSION
I wish I had a mentor right from primary school; the experience is amazing and educational. Mentoring is important both in the career development and personal growth of a person. Pass It On program makes mentorship even more fun and interesting since it combines both mentoring and touring. This time it was #tembeaKilifi, we traveled on Thursday April 19th at night by bus which was fun and arrived on Friday morning. We engaged in Baobab beach clean-up with the Go Make Impact Foundation, Eco-Youth Initiative and the Kilifi youths. All members involved agreed that plastic bags along Kilifi beaches were an environmental to both the marine life and surroundings. The aspects of good leadership skills and team work were shown during the clean up. Saturday was the long awaited day of mentorship. The turn up and the willingness of the Kilifi youths really humbled us. Entrepreneurship, volunteerism, talent and career are the main four pillars that were focused on during the session. The plenary session was an interactive way for engaging the youths. Through the session, the key speakers were able to answer satisfactorily all the questions asked by the youth.Through the better part of the afternoon, the Kilifi youths spent time in groups sharing with each other on how best the 4 pillars would be exploited to propel them to the next level.
Finally the group leaders presented the key challenges, opportunities and channels that would enable them move to the next level through through the four pillars. To make employers happy the issue of youths lacking enthusiasm about mentorship at work place was discussed under the career pillar. Pass It On Kilifi was all about encouraging youths to seek mentorship, because the end results are more than worth it keeping in mind that the lessons, connections and opportunities mentors provide are invaluable. After all was said and done, eMentoring Africa, Go Make Impact Foundation (GMIF), Eco-Youth Initiative and Pwani University representatives took stock of learning curves from the Mentorship experience. All short term and long term plans were deliberated especially on how to reach the youths in the villages going forward.
Why in the world would you miss such a session?
Volunteer for the next..
