The Transformative Journey of Dr. Fabio Ogachi: From Mentee to Mental Wellness Advocate

Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.” – Orison Swett Marden

Dr. Fabio Ogachi’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and unwavering dedication to mental wellness. From his early days as an undergraduate at Moi University to his current roles as CEO of Wellness Initiatives and a Lecturer in Psychology at Kenyatta University, his story exemplifies the power of mentorship, education, and a deep commitment to transforming lives.

Early Life and Educational Background

Growing up in a modest environment, Dr. Ogachi faced the challenges of pursuing academic excellence. His love for education blossomed during his studies at Moi University, particularly through his fascination with psychology, which delved into the complexities of the human mind and behavior.

After completing his degree, Dr. Ogachi sought teaching opportunities and landed a job at a private school in Githurai, where he earned a modest income of Ksh. 5,000/- paid in instalments! It was during this time that he discovered his passion for mental wellness through conversations with students outside the classroom, sparking a desire to make a difference. This drive led him to pursue higher education, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.

The Impact of eMentoring Africa

Dr. Ogachi’s association with eMentoring Africa (eMA) began as a fresh graduate navigating the complexities of career and personal development. Enrolling in the Graduates Jobseekers Forum (now WEMA – Work Experience and Mentorship Academy) by eMA, he sought career guidance and hope. The mentorship he received was instrumental in shaping his career path, honing his professional skills, and instilling a deep sense of responsibility toward community service.

During his time at eMA, Dr. Ogachi recalls the impactful mentorship experiences, including visiting professionals and giving back to the community through mentorship. These experiences gave him purpose and a chance to learn and grow. He fondly remembers the warmth and inspiration provided by Esther, the CEO of eMA, whose bright smile and caring attitude made life’s journeys seem navigable.

A Career Dedicated to Mental Wellness

With a Ph.D. and a heart full of passion, Dr. Ogachi chose to specialize in mental wellness, a field he believes is crucial in today’s fast-paced world. He now serves as a lecturer in the Psychology Department at Kenyatta University and the CEO and Founder of Wellness Initiatives Consulting, offering innovative wellness solutions to organizations, groups, and individuals.

Dr. Ogachi’s dedication is evident in his approach to counseling, where he combines academic knowledge with empathy and understanding developed through his experiences. He is particularly passionate about mental wellness in young people, advocating for early intervention and support.

Other Life Pursuits

Through eMA, Dr. Ogachi landed his first sales and marketing job, selling ad space for an educational directory, followed by a stint in insurance sales. Although challenging, these roles taught him resilience, determination, and the art of accepting rejection. During his master’s studies in Counseling Psychology, a referral from his lecturer led to a volunteering opportunity at a Rehab Centre, which later turned into a full-time job. He credits these opportunities to the power of networking and being bold enough to ask.

Giving Back and Mentorship

What sets Dr. Ogachi apart is his commitment to giving back. Recognizing the impact that mentorship had on his own life, he now mentors young professionals, offering the same guidance and support that once helped him navigate his life and career. His work with eMentoring Africa has come full circle, as he continues to inspire and support the next generation.

As we were closing off, I was compelled to ask about his favorite author. Seth Godin, an author of various books, tops the list as one of the few whose works inspire him. He particularly admires Godin’s book Purple Cow.

“eMentoring Africa is doing a remarkable job, and Esther still remains at the forefront of being and bringing that change we need to see in our community,” says Dr. Ogachi. His story is a powerful reminder that mentorship can be a catalyst for change, not just for the individual, but for entire communities.

Dr. Ogachi exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship and education. His journey from a young mentee to a Lecturer in Counseling and a Founder is a story of perseverance, passion, and the desire to make a lasting difference. He urges the youth to keep pursuing their dreams, experimenting, and putting themselves out there, reminding them that they have the luxury of time.
