Empowering the Youth of Samburu: A Mentorship Journey for the KDEF (Kenya Drylands Education Fund)

From December 16th to 18th, 2024, eMentoring Africa, in partnership with the Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF), facilitated an inspiring three-day mentorship program in Ngurunit, Samburu County. This initiative brought together teens under KDEF’s education scholarship, aiming to empower them with essential life skills and knowledge to navigate their futures.

The program kicked off with a warm introduction and familiarization session. Mr. Ahmed Kura, Co-Founder of KDEF, along with Sarah Hadden, the Co-Founder and Ms. Anne Marie, the KDEF Communications Lead, shared the remarkable journey of KDEF and its mission to support education in marginalized areas touching on the immense impact KDEF has had on the people of Samburu County.

Ms. Esther Muchiri, Executive  Director of eMentoring Africa, shared on the history,  goals and vision of eMentoring Africa, touching on the different activities we have done geared toward mentorship and youth empowerment.

A Dynamic Learning Experience

Over the three days, the teens engaged in dynamic mentorship cycles covering vital topics such as Sexual and Reproductive Health, Financial Literacy, Career Guidance, Social Media Safety, and Life Skills Development. The sessions were facilitated by eMA mentors, namely: Esther Muchiri, Elnorah Chao, Elly Ruuri, Mutathi Wachira and Dr. Njeri Ngaruiya

On Day 1, the teens were grouped and paired with mentors to begin their journey of discovery. Through interactive games and group activities, they explored these topics in engaging ways, sharing their expectations and providing valuable feedback.

Day 2 saw three mentorship cycles, allowing the teens to dive deeper into each topic. In the afternoon, team-building activities brought everyone together to foster collaboration and camaraderie. The day ended with meaningful fireside chats, where boys and girls separately engaged in candid conversations with male and female mentors, creating safe spaces for dialogue.

On the final day, the last mentorship cycle wrapped up the learning sessions. The program concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Njeri. Mentors reflected on the three days, answering insightful questions posed by the moderator.

A Memorable Experience

The mentorship sessions were filled with energy, laughter, and learning. Teens actively participated, shared their experiences, and left with newfound confidence and skills to face their academic, personal, and professional journeys.

This mentorship program reaffirmed the power of collective effort in shaping brighter futures for the youth and teens of Samburu County.
